This is my story with Emotional Intelligence (EI); I encourage you to give yourself such an opportunity. This incident happened with a co- worker of mine and it was too difficult for me to forget it due to the impact it left on me.
The incident also opened my eyes to number of very critical issues in my personal and professional life. Definitely, there were things that I never realized, and as the Dr. said then: 'There are things around us that we know, but we don’t know that we know it! '
We were five young salesmen at the office, and here comes our supervisor, the man which we used to fear some and respect a lot. He started humiliating our friend Emad, with very nasty words because Emad failed to make the “Target” which we all tried to make that month.
My Mind was one time on Emad due to the daring of the supervisor, and on myself and other salesmen, on other times because of the anger and the hostility the boss displayed that evening and what was the result of the bosses’ humiliation to Imad next day: some of us did not show up, others expressed their disappointment and another made a statement- which stock in my mind: “I thought that he had some EI!” perhaps he meant the supervisor.
So, I asked my friend: What did your mean; about this EI? During that time some started to put out C.V’s while before we were full of motivation and enthusiasm and loyalty to the company. So, what did you mean by EI and what does it have to do with us, I asked? He said that is exactly what we are experiencing at work and he explained to me that there are some competences; emotional skills which we need as people and if we lacked it or ignored it or failed to manage it properly we will act just like the supervisor. We have witnessed a boss smeared the company’s reputation and image and depressed people and created a crisis for us.
Since that incident, I started to search and read on EI, and this search journey made a qualitative difference in my personal and professional life.
EI means understanding your own emotions and those of others. It means the impact of emotions on our daily behaviors, decision making and your health (physical and mental).
Thus, I decided to attend workshops, read books and ask questions. I learned that EI is a bout learned skills and competency which we are desperate for in management. I learned that emotions are a basic component of humans and they are an integral part of our mind.
I also have found that EI is measurable and is able to develop and improve. It’s about management of people and relationships such as that incident with our supervisor. By the way, almost all salesmen had left the company, mainly due to that supervisor.
I learned that EI is a central component of customer service as well as managing relationship with your boss or your subordinates. It is a key to the success of the company because company is all about people (resources) managing (material resources).
I have nasalized that EI is essential to all firms, companies and institutions because human element is the most essential for its making and for prosperity. The success of the company is conditioned with the appreciation and satisfaction of the client. If client is unhappy, company’s life is threatened.
EI is a powerful tool for sales, leadership, decision making, problem solving and motivation. It's about that “Emotional charge” one needs to move on and take challenges.
Today, I realize the number of EI terms I have been using every day. I was with a friend the other day –who is an engineer-and I was proud to refer to EI concept;” Emotional Radar “. To my surprise the engineer shocked me by saying that he uses EI daily to impress his customers and he refers to another concept; the "Emotional Environment" and the Psychology of Architecture.
I realize that the claim that logic and rational thinking and the whole IQ issues are what counts for success is not a practical claim. If we ignore the impact of “Anger”, “fear” or motivation on performance, we can imagine the losses of mismanaging those emotions on the customer, profit, company’s image and future.
Research improves that EQ and not IQ counts for 70% of our professional success. While IQ makes talented person, EQ is what makes a successful professional.
We learned that EI rate can be increased. It is used as a treatment method to depression, addiction, and personality change and relationship problems. It improves communication, learning motive and marketing plan.
The more I read about EI, the more find out how deep I hoped to dig to learn about my own emotions and those of others .I cannot see myself any longer not using terms as "emotional fitness, emotional toxins and emotional balance" and many more I will mention later. EI is learning about the electrical charge which energizes our minds and our bodies.
Can you sustain the darkness in your life after what you have learned about EI now? Honestly, I couldn’t.
This is my story with the Emotional Intelligence. I invite you to take this learning opportunity and you will see the amazing change in your personality, relationships and you lifestyle.
